On October 21, 2015 a special committee of the Bangladesh cabinet approved the proposal to buy a satellite system for the 'Bangabandhu Satellite 1'. In November of that year, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (BTRC) contracted with Thales Alenya Space to buy satellite system.
According to the agreement, initially, the company will be responsible for the construction and maintenance of satellites.
'Bangabandhu Satellite-1' has 40 transponders Out of which 26 KU-Band and 14 C-Bands. Bangladesh will initially use 20 of those transponders. The rest will be rented. The ground station of the satellite is being built in Joydebpur of Gazipur and Batbunia of Rangamati.
